Location:
The Retiro is a traditional neighborhood in the city of Buenos Aires, bordering the neighborhoods of Recoleta to the north and northwest and south St. Nicholas. The name comes from the Casa del Retiro, house built at the the early eighteenth century at the intersection of the current Arenales and Maipú by Governor Agustin de Robles, very close to the hermitage of San Sebastian already there since 1608.
One of the main attractions of the neighbourhood is the Plaza San Martín, park designed in 1936 by Carlos León Thays, with impressive trees, nice sidewalks and pleasant strolls, and its beautiful gorge toward the Plaza de los Ingleses, in the center of which stands the eponymous tower.
The neighbourhood may be considered the center of the city, concentrating numerous luxury hotels and office buildings, embassies plus a wide variety of bars and restaurants. Also known in the neighbourhood are the giant stations of three rail lines, buses and collective services for urban, intercity or long distance services from the Terminal Terrestre de Retiro.
The Florida Street that that begins in the Plaza San Martin is the most famous pedestrian street in the city and receives millions of visitors daily through its 11 colorful blocks. Florida is an important commercial center whose first section is linked to the City (main financial center) and includes clothing stores, shoes, wallets, jackets, dress, galleries, shops and kiosks and magazines newspapers, as well as cafes and restaurants.
Some of the many important buildings in the neighbourhood are The Circulo Militar of about 12 thousand covered square meters, build in the early twentieth century; The Palacio San Martin, built in 1909 with a baroque facade, and notorious French influence; The Galerias Pacifico designed by the architects Raul Emilio and Agrelo Vacher in 1889, to house a collection of stores similar to those in France or Italy, bought in 1908 by the railway company in Buenos Aires and transformed in 1946, into a shopping mall, covering the hallways with barrel vaults that converge in a large central dome of 450 square meters; the Monastery of St. Catherine of Siena started in 1737, year in which it was decided to acquire a new ground on the block now bounded by the streets San Martín, Viamonte, Reconquista and Av. Cordoba, building constructed in full brick and limestone and is one of the best examples of colonial architecture; The Basilica del Santísimo Sacramento build in 1916, The Plaza Hotel opened in 1909, The Kavanagh Building, first skyscraper in Buenos Aires build in 1936 with a clear Art Deco influence; The Plaza de la Republica del Canada with an authentic totem pole from brought from Vancouver Island; The Torre Monumental or Torre de los Ingleses, monument donated by the Anglo-Argentine community for the 1910 centennial celebrations; the neo-Gothic building of The Administracion de Parques Nacionales built by architects and Passeron Brizuela in 1880, together with new building like the 1975 Pirelli building or the new modern high-rise business district of Catalinas Norte.
