Bayreuth Festival in Barcelona

For lovers of Wagner Opera the first week of September will have the rare opportunity to hear the Bayreuth Festival in Barcelona.

It rarely happens that Bayreuth productions have taken place outside the Festspielhaus, but Barcelona and the Gran Teatre de Liceu will have the honor that for a second time in its history will host from September 1 to September 6 the Bayreuth Festival company presenting 3 Operas in concert version from this season Bayreuth Festival of 2012, that will have just closed the Festspielhaus. The first time that the whole Bayreuth Festival company left the Festspielhaus was under the Overall Management of Wieland and Wolfgang Wagner in 1955 performing in Paris and Barcelona the productions of Parsifal, Die Walküre and Tristan und Isolde.

The world opera seasons of 2012-2013 will be celebrating the bicentenary of the birth of Richard Wagner and the Gran Teatre del Liceu de Barcelona opens its season with the productions, in concert version, of the 2012 Wagner festival with the Bayreuth Festival’s Orchestra, Choirs and the lead vocalists of Richard Wagners’s operas: Der Fliegende Holländer (The Flying Dutchman), Lohengrin and Tristan und Isolde.

Der Fliegende Holländer, music and libretto by Richard Wagner premiered in Dresden in January 1843. Wagner acknowledged that he had based the plot on Heinrich Heine’s satire “The Memoirs of Mister von Schnabelewopski”. The central theme is the redemption through love in which a Dutchman sailor is doomed to wander forever in a ship until he finds a woman able to profess an absolute loyalty to him and leave her world -family, status, affection, to follow him.

Lohengrin, romantic opera in three acts composed and written by Wagner first performed in 1850. The story is taken from medieval German romance, the Parzival of Wolfram von Eschenbach and its sequel, Lohengrin from a different author, inspired by the epic of Garin le Loherain , which explains the failure of the exploits of the knight Lohengrin of the order of the Holy Grail.

Tristan und Isolde premiered on 1865, music drama in three acts composed by Wagner based largely on the romance by Gottfried von Straßburg, that recounts the tragic love of the protagonists and the passion of love that clings so overwhelmingly over them and against their own will, over moral norms and laws of God, and that only with the death find its compliance. The opera was inspired by Wagner’s affair with Mathilde Wesendonck.

Sebastian Wiegle, will be conducting at the Gran Teatre de Liceu the operas Der Fliegende Holländer and Lohengrin while Peter Schneider will be the conductor of Tristan und Isolde. German Conductor Sebastian Weigle, actually general music director of Frankfurt Opera and regular in the Bayreuth Festival since 2007, had been musical director of the Gran Teatre del Liceu between 2004 and 2009. Austrian Conductor Peter Schneider was kapellmeister of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Düsseldorf-Duisburg from 1961 to 1968, general music director of the Bremer Philharmoniker from 1978 to 1985, opera director and general music director of Nationaltheater Mannheim from 1985-1987, and general music director of the Bayerische Staatsoper orchestra, München from 1993-1998; he has also been regular in the Festspielhaus since 1981.

The mentioned directors will be conducting the Bayreuth Festival’s Orchestra and Choirs and in the leading roles of the Flying Dutchman: Ricarda Merbeth as Senta, Franz-Josef Selig as Daland, Michael König as Erik, Christa Mayer as Mary and Benjamin Bruns as Timoner;in Lohengrin: Klaus Florian Vogt as Lohengrin, Wilhelm Schwinghammer as Rei Heinrich, Annette Dasch as Elsa, Thomas J.
