The Barcelona World Race is a unique two-handed round the world race, held every four years, that brings together the international skippers at the top of their professional sailing careers. This ‘two-up’ challenge, from Barcelona to Barcelona around the three capes, links the worlds of solo and crew oceanic racing and their new generation of IMOCA Open 60s Monohulls.
Some teams have already confirmed their entry to this new challenge, 2nd Barcelona World Race, starting the list with Jean-Pierre Dick, the first edition Barcelona World Race 2007-2008 brilliant winner, this time accompanied by Loïck Peyron on the brand new Virbac-Paprec 3.  Alex Thomson, on the Hugo Boss, Alex Pella and Pepe Ribes on the Estrella Damm, Pachi Rivero and Toño Piris on the W Hotels, Michel Desjoyeaux  and François Gabart on the new Foncia, Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández on the Movistar and  Juan Merediz and Francisco Palacios on the Central Lechera Asturiana have also joined the fleet, together with the names of Albert Bargués and Eric Villalón on board of ESP 33 – Educación sin Fronteras / Zero Limits. For the first time there will be also a female crew with Dee Caffari and Anna Corbella sponsored by GAES Solidaria.
Other names should appear to complete the list but, due to marketing strategy reasons or because they are on the final stages towards signing sponsorships, the names have not been revealed yet and should be confirmed soon.
The Organizing Authority of the Barcelona World Race is the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB), created in 2005 with the aim of encouraging the culture for the sea and increasing the level of offshore sailing in Spain, based on three main strategies: sport, industry and technology and communication. The FNOB was the result of a working platform between the Barcelona City Council, the Fira de Barcelona, the Barcelona Port Authority, Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, and the technical management of the Consorci EL FAR.

The NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record

About Barcelona

The NY-BCN Transoceanic Sailing Record is a sailing challenge between the cities of New York and Barcelona. The aim is to set a sailing world record between both cities, and to strengthen the connection between New York and Barcelona with a strong socio-cultural, educational and sporting program. It is a pioneer initiative as it is also the first time in sailing history that a record has been set between an Atlantic and a Mediterranean City.
The two IMOCA Open 60s Estrella Damm and W-Hotels started the race on April Thursday 8th, after leaving New York’s Ambrose Light at a little after 1430hrs (NY Time) in warm, summer-like sunshine.
After the start at Ambrose Light the yachts will look for the shortest route, also known as the “Grand Circle line” using wind currents in the bay to climb latitudes, avoiding the icebergs, to grapple with the anticyclone in the Azores and enter the Mediterranean sea through the Gibraltar Strait. Then they will get in the Alboran sea and depending very much on the weather conditions the boats will arrive to Barcelona where the finish line will be situated opposite the New W Hotel at the side of the Barcelona Port with the race programmed to finish between the 20th and the 30th of April. The competition is set to last between 18 and 22 days covering a course of approx 3.750 nautical miles (6.945 Km).
The Estrella Damm and WHotels boats, two of the latest generation IMOCA Open 60s (monohulls also used for the Vendée Globe and the Barcelona World Race), will transform this race into a veritable transatlantic battle of Equals, with two Spanish and one US sailor per boat (Pepe Ribes (ESP), Alex Pella (ESP) and Stan Schreyer (USA) as co-skippers in the Estrella Damm, and Antonio Piris (ESP), Pachi Rivero (ESP) and Peter B. Becker (USA)  as co-skippers in the W-Hotels’).
This race is an initiative of the Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB) with the support of the New York City Sports Commission, Real Club Náutico de Barcelona and the New York Yacht Club. The Fundació Navegació Oceànica Barcelona (FNOB) is also the organizer of the Barcelona World Race that on the second two-handed non-stop edition of the world race will start on December 31st, 2010.
