Motörhead - The World Is Yours

About Barcelona

To coincide with the release of their upcoming 20th studio album, The World Is Yours, Motörhead will embark on a UK tour in November 2010 and on a European tour in December 2010, being on stage in Barcelona on December 17 in the Sant Jordi Club concert stage.
The British  group Motörhead is a rock band formed in 1975 by bassist, singer and songwriter Ian Fraser Kilmister (the only  constant member of the band) , known mostly by his stage name Lemmy. The rock/heavy-metal band,  usually a power trio, had particular success in the early 1980s with several successful singles in the UK Top chart and the albums Overkill, Bomber, Ace of Spades, and particularly No Sleep 'til Hammersmith cemented Motörhead's rock reputation.
The sound of Motörhead is typically classified as heavy metal, even though, Lemmy dislikes the label, preferring to describe the band's music simply as "rock n' roll" and usually opening live shows with the line "We are Motörhead; We play rock and roll". Motörhead's approach has remained the same over the band's career with their appreciation of early rock and roll and the lyrics cover current topics as war, good versus evil, abuse of power, promiscuous sex, substance abuse, and "life on the road"
Motörhead current members of the band are Ian "Lemmy" Kilmister / vocals, bass, Phil Campbell / guitar, backing vocals and Mikkey Dee / drums, percussion.
Motörhead  will be in Barcelona in the Sant Jordi Club, a medium size concert space opened in 2007 equipped with the very latest light and sound equipment, used for concerts of small or medium capacity that can accommodate up to 3.000 people, that forms part of the Palau Sant Jordi Sports Arena complex on the Montjuic Mountain right next to the Olympic Stadium.

Convidats d’Honor - Guests of Honour

About Barcelona

MNAC- December 09 to April 10

To celebrate the 75 anniversary of the inauguration of the Museu d’Art de Catalunya, the MNAC is celebrating it by bringing together 75 masterpieces of Catalan art from different periods belonging to private collections, Catalan, European and American museums, and ecclesiastic patrimony. From December 2 2009 to April 11 2010 the show will allow a journey through the history of Catalan art from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Important pieces of great artistic quality from the Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods, the nineteenth century, and the first three decades of the twentieth century. For some of these art works it is the first time they have left their usual place in the churches or cathedrals of Catalunya to be included in this commemorative exhibition, and in some cases like the Beget Majesty, a major work of Catalan Romanesque sculpture church of Sant Cristòfor in Beget, or the great Gothic altarpiece of the Virgin of L’Escala by Joan Antigó, in the monastery church of Sant Esteve in Banyoles, it will serve also to carry out the restoration of the works.
It is also the opportunity to see together with these masterpieces other that actually are located outside of Catalunya, like Pere Oller’s relief from the tomb of King Ferdinand I of Antequera, originally in the monastery of Poblet and now in the Musée du Louvre; the Annunciation by Bernat Martorell from the Musée des beaux-arts in Montreal; Mediterranean, by Aristides Maillol, from the Musée d’Orsay or The Farmer’s Wife by Joan Miró from the Centre Georges Pompidou, as examples. Other works have been presented by Catalan institutions and museums, like the embroidery of Saint George and the Princess from the chapel in the Palau de la Generalitat; the embroidered frontal of Jesus and the Evangelists from the Museu Episcopal de Vic, or Marià Fortuny’s The Carpet Seller from the Museu de Montserrat.
The celebration of the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Museum of Catalan Art gives the MNAC the opportunity to house for a few months this excellent selection of Guests of Honour from well known names like Joan Miro, Isidre Nonell, Joaquim Sunyer, Antoni Gaudi, Salvador Dali, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas, Juli Gonzalez, Mariá Fortuny, Aristides Maillol, Joaquim Mir, Pau Gargallo, Mestre de Cabany, and many others in only one exhibition.

Font Magica de Montjuic

About Barcelona

One of the interesting sites to visit in the Montjuic Mountain which attracts large numbers of visitors, including both local and foreigners, is the Font Magica at the end of Reina Maria Cristian Avenue.
For the Great Universal Exhibition of 1929 the engineer Carles Buigas designed and ambitious project of fountains, cascades, ponds, jets that went from the Palau Nacional, up on the Montjuic mountain up to Plaza España, ending with a bright row of columns on either side of the Reina Maria Cristina Avenue (now replaced by illuminated jet fountains of similar proportions). At the time of the project many thought that it was too ambitious to be created, so unexpected and stunning that it was even branded by some as madness.
Over 3000 workers were commissioned to work on this technically amazing engineer and physics project to be finished in less than one year; the first performance took place on May 19, 1929. Buigas discovered that the light should be concentrated so as to avoid larger beams obscuring smaller ones.
In the middle of this amazing project was built the main element of this set of plays of light and water, La Font Magica (Magic Fountain), a rounded shaped fountain of more than 50 meters of diameter. In the 1980s to make a greater spectacle the music was joined to the show, and shortly before the 1992 Olympic Games the fountains were restored completely.
In general performance times of the Magic Fountain of Montjuic are:
From October 1st to January 6th and from February 13th to April 30th:l Fridays and Saturdays from 19:00 h to 21:00 h; Music and color show at: 19/ 19.30/ 20 /20.30 h.

Christmas and Easter week: from Thursday to Sundays Music and color show at: 19/ 19.30/ 20 /20.30 h.

George Kolbe - The Morning - Dawn

About Barcelona

The Barcelona Pavilion is known as one of Mies van der Rohe‘s main works. However few observations have been made regarding Georg Kolbe’s sculpture Morning, which plays an important role as an integral component of architecture inside the building.
It is surprising also that the statue was not created for the Barcelona Pavilion, into which it was so successfully adapted. Together with the female figure Evening, Kolbe had made it for Ceciliengärten,“ the residential estate of Heinrich Lassen in Berlin-Schöneberg, where both works stood opposite one another on the central lawn. In 1927 the tinted plaster model of Morning stood in the center of a Kolbe room in the Munich Glass Palace, which the architect Wilhelm Kreis had designed. This plaster model was then shown in Barcelona in 1929. After the end of the exhibition and deconstruction of the Pavilion, the model was presumably destroyed. In the 1986 reconstruction of the Pavilion stands a bronze copy.
Shortly after the end of World War II, the bronzes Morning and Evening were separated and placed in different locations in Schöneberg, but were then reunited near the Schöneberg city hall. Since 1996 they have been back in the restored Ceciliengärten“.

Frederic Amat - Mural de le Olles

About Barcelona

The Mural de le Olles from Frederic Amat was inaugurated in 2001. It is a link of union among the new glass building of the Institut del Teatre and the back wall of the Mercat de les Flors. The Mural is formed by an endless amount of flattened pots, cracked open, before being cooked, and pierced like bodily organs, that cover completely the back wall of the Mercat de les Flors Theatre and two doors of forged iron. It is difficult to be seeing as there is no big perspective; a different view is from the inside of the Institute, through the glass windows.
The Ciutat del Teatre (Theatre City) of Barcelona, is a large complex of facilities for the formation of students in the Institut del Teatre, and two Theatres, The Mercat de le Flors Theatre and the Lluire Theatre in the ancient Palau de l'Agricultura (from the Universal exhibition of 1929) that accommodates a main room (Room Fabià Puigserver) and one more reduced the Lluire Space, on one of the side of the Montjuïc Park.
The dedication of Frederic Amat to his painting has not prevented him from exploring other artistic expression. Amat has been working simultaneously with different disciplines: theatre, cinema, photography and set design.

Duchamp, Man Ray, Picabia

About Barcelona

MNAC - Montjuic - June to September 2008

The Duchamp, Man Ray, Picabia exhibition, organized by Tate Modern, London, will be first in London from the 21st of February to the 26th of May, and in Barcelona at the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya from the 15th of June 2008 to 28th of September. The exhibition explores the affinities and parallels between the work of these three artists and the Dada Movement, showing how they responded to each other’s ideas and innovations, presenting these three important artists from the first half of the 20th century. These artists with their work changed the course of art expression - Marcel Duchamp, the father of conceptualism and creator of the “readymade”, Man Ray, the celebrated photographer and painter, and Francis Picabia, the French painter and poet.
Their meeting led to the creation of the Dada movement in New York during the First World War. These artists remained friends, with periods of varying intensity, throughout their lives and shared a special artistic dialogue. At the heart of their friendship lay a shared outlook on life, which emerges in their works via jokes, a sense of irony, and a pronounced interest in eroticism.
The exhibition will present paintings, objects, photographs and films of the three artists that reflect the universe shared during their Dadaistic experience.

Romanesque Gallery - Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya

About Barcelona

Montjuic Mountain - Palacio Nacional

The National Art Museum of Catalonia (Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya - MNAC) in Barcelona, is housed in the Palau Nacional at the Montjuich mountain, built for the 1929 International Fair.

It was during the last 80's that the Italian Architect Gae Aulenti was commissioned to carry out the project to adapt the old structure of the building and turn it into a museum with a modern concept for the display of the several collections that form part of it. Due to many technical complications these works lasted much longer than expected and it was only in 2004 that the works ended.

From all the collections in the museum the most outstanding is the one of Romanesque Art, considered really unique in the world for the size and quality of the mural paintings, mainly Catalan work from 11th, 12th and 13th centuries, one of the richest showcases of Catalan’s cultural baggage. They are the pictorial and sculptural exponents of the Romanesque churches scattered around Catalunya. These wall-paintings of Romanesque churches and chapels where transferred to the museum carefully taken out from there original location in the small churches around the country and place back in the new structures build for the purpose created as exact reproductions of the apses and walls of the churches to the relocate the paintings. It was a very important work to preserve the paintings from robberies and destruction.

Jean Scully at the Miro Foundation

About Barcelona

Retrospective Exhibition in Barcelona. Miro Foundation. June to September 2007

A retrospective of the work of Sean Scully (Dublin, 1945), who combines features of different pictorial styles – Geometrical Abstraction, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Abstract Expressionism – to create a language of his own.
“Sean Scully: I think that I wanted to do something in my life that wasn't ordinary - which wasn't normal. I couldn't bear to live my life as a normal person, put another way: conventionally. So if I had a choice between living in suburbia and being dead, I would rather be dead. That implies I am going to do something with my life that is not ordinary. Then it is only a question of what that is. I could have gone into a number of different things.” (from the JOURNAL OF CONTEMPORARY ART )
From June 28th till September 30th at the Miro Foundation in the Montjuïc Mountain.

The world of Anglada Camarasa

About Barcelona

Caixa Forum Barcelona - November 06 March 07

This exhibition considered like a great anthology dedicated to Hermen Anglada Camarasa, gathers all the stages of the work of the painter, since the beginning, by the hand of his teacher Modest Urgell, until the years of fullness. In addition, the exhibition displays the work of Anglada next to the work of his teachers and contemporaries to demonstrate the extraordinary irradiation that took place. Anglada Camarasa (Barcelona, 1871 - Port de Pollença, 1959) was one of the main names of the modern Catalan art and, with no doubt, the one that more international importance had in the change of century. Born in Barcelona in 1871, he only worked in Catalonia the first years of his life and during the period of the Spanish Civil War. The personality of Anglada Camarasa appears associate to two characteristic landscapes: the nocturnal Paris of the Belle Époque, that knew to shape with a mysterious and subtle art, and the landscapes of Majorca, where he sheltered fleeing from World War I. Anglada passed the last years of his life away from the artistic world and the tendencies more outposts of the contemporary art.
